The company recently placed a dramatic full-page advertisement in The Economic Times, signaling its intent to launch its first car under the standalone JSW Motors brand. The advertisement, featuring a shadowy silhouette of an SUV, invites dealer partners to 'join the drive,' marking the beginning of its retail network expansion.</p><p>The SUV in question is expected to be the Jetour T2 i-DM, a 4.7-meter, 5-seater plug-in hybrid SUV developed in collaboration with Chery Automobile. This partnership allows JSW to leverage Chery's expertise while establishing its footprint in the Indian passenger vehicle segment. The Jetour T2 i-DM will be locally assembled at JSW's upcoming greenfield production facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, which is set to commence production in the second half of 2026.</p><h3>Jetour T2 i-DM: Specs and Features</h3><p>The Jetour T2 i-DM is positioned as a premium offering in the SUV market, with a starting price expected to be around Rs 45 lakh. It aims to fill a niche in the Indian market, being one of the few plug-in hybrid vehicles available outside the luxury segment. The SUV is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a 3-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), delivering an output of 156 PS and 220 Nm. Complementing this setup is a 26.7 kWh battery pack, enabling a pure electric range of up to 130 km under the NEDC cycle. Notably, the vehicle supports fast charging, allowing the battery to be charged from 30% to 80% in about 30 minutes.</p><p>In terms of dimensions, the Jetour T2 i-DM measures 4,785 mm in length, 2,006 mm in width, and 1,875 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm. These dimensions promise a spacious interior, which, combined with its rugged design, aims to cater to both urban and off-road driving enthusiasts.</p><h3>Strategic Positioning and Market Entry</h3><p>JSW’s decision to debut with a plug-in hybrid vehicle is strategic, given the limited availability of such models in India. This move minimizes direct competition with products from the JSW MG Motor joint venture, where JSW holds a minority stake. Moreover, the introduction of the Jetour T2 i-DM aligns with JSW’s broader strategy to focus on new energy vehicles (NEVs), which encompasses both plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles.</p><p>JSW's aggressive timeline reflects its ambition to become India's third homegrown passenger vehicle brand, following Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra. The company has committed a substantial $3 billion over the next five years towards the development of EVs and hybrids. This includes the construction of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant, which will initially have an annual production capacity of 500,000 units, scalable to 2 million units. Another facility in Odisha spans 900 acres, underscoring JSW's commitment to the Indian automotive sector.</p><p>Despite these plans, JSW faces challenges, particularly concerning the import of critical components from China. India's stringent quality control regulations could delay the launch if approvals are not expedited. Nonetheless, JSW is actively working to localize up to 75% of its production components at launch, aiming for full localization subsequently.</p><p>As JSW Motors prepares to launch the Jetour T2 i-DM by the festive season of 2026, prospective dealers have been invited to express their interest by March 11, 2026.
