Defender OCTA Powers JCB Hydromax to Record-Breaking Glory
The Land Rover Defender OCTA played a crucial role in the recent record-breaking achievement of the JCB Hydromax, a hydrogen combustion vehicle, at the Bonneville Salt Flats. This triumphant event saw the JCB Hydromax set a new land speed record of 406.320 mph, underlining the incredible capabilities of both the vehicle and its support team.
Chosen for its exceptional performance and versatility, the Defender OCTA was instrumental in the record attempt, providing the initial push needed to get the JCB Hydromax up to speed. The rules permitted a push from a standstill for up to 300 meters, a task perfectly suited to the Defender OCTA's robust engineering and design.
Engineering Excellence in Action
The Defender OCTA's unique attributes made it the ideal candidate for this demanding task. Equipped with a twin-turbo V8 engine and a 48V mild-hybrid system, the vehicle boasts a formidable 635PS, allowing it to push the 2,550kg JCB Hydromax from a standstill to 60 mph in the limited 300 meters available. This power is complemented by its advanced 6D Dynamics suspension, ensuring stability and control during the critical initial stages of the record attempt.
The vehicle's suspension system, featuring hydraulically-interlinked and continuously variable semi-active dampers, effectively eliminates body roll and pitch, maintaining a level attitude even under hard acceleration. This was essential to keep the push plate at the correct angle, preventing any disturbance to the JCB Hydromax as it accelerated towards its record-breaking speed.
A Bespoke Modification
A custom push plate was attached to the Defender OCTA, utilizing its integrated, crash-tested winch mount. This bespoke addition required careful engineering to ensure it could withstand the demands of high-speed pushing. The winch mount's deformable crumple zone was disabled, and additional fixing points, including a brace bar to the front recovery point, were added to ensure robustness and reliability.
The modifications were thoroughly tested at speeds exceeding those required for the record attempt, ensuring the Defender OCTA was fully equipped to handle the challenge. The vehicle's all-wheel-drive capability and high-performance attributes made it well-suited to the loose surface and varying conditions of the Bonneville Salt Flats.
